Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren-Mercedes take Turkish F1 Grand Prix
Kimi Raikkonen in his McLaren-Mercedes F1won the inaugural Turkish Grand Prix ahead of the leader in the championship race, Fernando Alonso, in his Renault. A late mistake by Kimi's team mate Juan Pablo Montoya allowed Alonso to take second and prevented McLaren claiming a deserved one two finish. It also meant that Alonso's lead was cut by only two points instead of four leaving him with a twenty four point lead with five races to go.

Raikkonen started from pole position but was overtaken by the fast starting Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella who's lead was to last less than a lap when Raikkonen moved into the lead towards the end of lap one, he passed Fisichella at the end of the back straight, emerging ahead after going into the corner three abreast with the two Renaults; from then on it was Kimi's race all the way. ‘'I had some wheel spin off the line which allowed ‘Fisi' to get ahead but I was confident that we had the speed to beat them ‘' said Kimi.

The start of the race was clean, the only major incident saw Sauber's over-eager Felipe Massa damage his left wing after running into Nick Heidfeld's Williams. Michael Schumacher made a great start from the back of the grid but a collision with Mark Weber's Williams on lap fifteen finished his day. Britain's Jenson Button climbed from thirteenth on the grid to his finishing position of fifth in ten laps.

The Williams pair of Heidfeld and Weber had a succession of right rear tyre failures resulting in another pointless weekend. There's speculation that possibly some part of the car touched the tyre inthe demanding eighth corner; this corner producing an incredible four Gs and is sure to become one of the great corners in F1.
