Ex- Culture Club pop singer Boy George sweeps streets in New York
Ex-Culture Club flamboyant gender-bender pop singer Boy George has been sweeping streets in New York as part of a five-day community service sentence.

However, the star whose real name is George O'Dowd, had to be moved into a fenced-off area after only 30 minutes to get him away from a mob of media reporters and photographers.

Boy George, 45, wore a fluorescent jacket, gloves and sunglasses and he had previously made a joke of the punishment by saying that he had "always been a scrubber".

Boy George was found guilty of wasting police time in an incident last year and was also threatened with jail if he failed to complete the court-imposed sentence.

Last October Boy George had called the police to his New York home and after a small amount of cocaine was found in his apartment the singer was arrested.

However, the drugs possession charge was dropped in March after Boy George pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of wasting police time.

Boy George ranted at the media representatives who had gathered and, at one point, swept a pile of leaves towards them.

"This is supposed to be community service," the singer said angrily.

"You're just making it a nightmare, which just means it's for the media and not for me," Boy George added.
