France captain Zinedine Zidane wins Golden Ball despite being sent off
France captain Zinedine Zidane won the Golden Ball award for the World Cup's best player, in spite of being sent off for head butting Marco Materazzi in the final.

Zinedine Zidane, 34, polled 2,012 points in the vote by journalists mostly carried out at half-time and beat Italians Fabio Cannavaro (1,977 points) and Andrea Pirlo (715 points) in the ballot.

Zinedine Zidane scored a penalty early on in the final but was dismissed from the game in extra time as France went on to lose on penalties.

Zinedine Zidane, who is already former international player of the year and 1998 World Cup winner, announced last month that he was leaving football after the tournament.

On Sunday, after he put France ahead in the opening minutes Zinedine Zidane ruined his performance after butting his head into Marco Materazzi's chest during the tense second period of extra time, which ended 1-1.

This was to be Zinedine Zidane's final act as a professional player and, with the French side missing his ability in the ensuing penalty shootout, Italy went on to win the World Cup title.
