France and the United States in winemaking competition
Experts on wine in London and California are getting ready to hold a wine tasting contest to decide if France or America makes the best wine.

The competition recreates a tasting 30 years ago in which France lost after French experts decided wines from California were better on that occasion and the result was seen as a blow to French national pride as well as shocking the country's wine industry.

The wine tasting is to take place on neutral territory in London at one of Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchants - the Berry Brothers & Rudd wine shop in St James's Street.

The American part of the contest is being held at Copia, the US centre for wine, food & the arts, in the Napa Valley, California, a region famous for its wine production.

In 1976, in a competition called Judgment of Paris, nine French experts agreed that the Californian wines they had blind-tasted were superior to the French, now the rematch will include all the original red wines tasted in 1976, to see how well they have aged, as well as newer wines from both countries.

The French wine industry has had many problems in recent years mainly due to the glut of wine on the world market and strong competition from other nations.
