Tom Cruise's fiancée Katie Holmes joins Scientology too

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise says his fiancee Katie Holmes has joined him as a member of the Church of Scientology and he told US network ABC that their soon to be born baby would not be baptised a Catholic, although Holmes, 27, was brought up in that religion.

Tom Cruise denied American media reports that he had bought a dummy to quieten the moans of his partner as she gave birth and he claimed Scientology's doctrine of "silent birth" had been misunderstood and exaggerated by the press.

Asked if their baby would be given a traditional Catholic baptism, he responded: "You can be Catholic and a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and be a Scientologist. But we're just Scientologists."

And Tom Cruise denied reports that the couple's relationship had caused problems with Holmes' devout Catholic family.

The Church of Scientology, set up in the United States in 1954 offers self-improvement on the basis of the teachings of the late science-fiction author L Ron Hubbard but critics say it is a fake religion and a cult based on making money from its supporters.

Tom Cruise is known for having strong views in support of Scientology and he went to Germany in 2002 to try to defend his religion against a government ban.

Tom Cruise told GQ magazine in another interview that the couple plan to get married in late summer or early autumn of this year.
