France and Spain united in the fight against terrorism

Spain and France have decided to strengthen co-operation in the fight against Islamic militancy, illegal immigration and organized crime. A meeting of the interior ministers of the two countries took place on Friday, 15 July.

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed to deport any Muslim cleric preaching violence. "Nothing can explain nor justify what terrorists are doing," he said. "We must never give them the satisfaction of division between us." "I shall ask for the systematic expulsion of the imams present in France whose sermons are radical", he told reporters.

Minister Sarkozy has further stated that "The [French] republic is not a weak regime and it does not have to accept a speech which on the pretext that it is happening in a place of worship calls for hate and murder. Those who persist in this way will systematically be the object of an expulsion procedure."

After the London bombing France has stepped up security measures, including restoring border controls with its EU nieighbours.

Also French President Jacques Chirac has announced that all countries must fight against terrorism. "These terrorists have a mentality, a psychological state that is different from our own. All efforts must be made to fight against terrorism," he said.
