Spiderman climbs again

Alain Robert, or Spiderman as he is known due to his penchant for climbing skyscrapers, scaled one of the 400-ft Mercurial Towers in the Paris suburb of Bagnolet on Wednesday with no safety net, clamps or suction cups, just his bare hands and climbing shoes.

The 31-storey building will be his last climb before he must spend one week in a Texas prison for trespassing and possessing drugs and he was ascending the Tower in protest. He was arrested just before climbing the One Houston Center in November last year and was said to have had the sedative, Xanax, on his person, which he claimed was for epilepsy.

Robert has been arrested several times before in various countries and the trials have been more a formality than anything else. Previously he has always been discharged.

Robert, born in 1962 in France, has climbed over 70 of the world's tallest buildings, including the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, the Empire State Building and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. He has suffered two accidents whilst climbing at the age of 19 and 20 whereby doctors deemed him 66% handicapped and told him he could not climb again. Nevertheless 6 months later he was climbing again and has not looked back since. He is paid to climb many buildings and raises a lot of money for charities. In 2003 he was paid about $18,000 to climb Lloyd's of London as promotion for Spider-Man, the movie's premiere on Sky Movies in Britain.
