Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova beaten by Maria Kirilenko
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is now out of the Australian Open after she was beaten by compatriot Maria Kirilenko with a 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-4 score.

In a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes, Sharapova made a large number of errors in what was her first competitive match this year.

Maria SharapovaKirilenko gained confidence to play better and go ahead to win the game as she saw her fellow Russian not playing at anywhere near her best and making so many errors.

Sharapova failed to take part in any singles tennis between July 2008 and May of last year because she needed all that time away from the sport to make her recovery from shoulder surgery.

Losing in the Australian Open was a very disappointing experience for her and a bad start to this year.
