South-eastern France in fire.
The fires covered 2 thousands hectares of pine forests and cultivated fields in the south-east of France and the island of Corsica on Friday, July 1.The fire was probably caused by intentional arson the day before, last Thursday. Despite the immediate action of 260 firemen, it spread, due to strong winds, to other areas. To extinguish the flames, the fire fighting brigades were using helicopters bombing the fire with water.
According to a survey, the French take three types of action in fire protection: fire prevention education for the public (for example: the communities have to manage their domestic waste dumps in a way that prevents spontaneous combustion), surveillance of forested areas for early fire detection and vegetation management to reduce fuels. The danger of fire in the forest areas seems to be a real problem for inhabitants of south-eastern France. That is the reason why the authorities released a plan of risk zones ("Plan de Zones U Risque"). The document from 1992 classified the territory in fire risk zones and provided a method of preventing their outbreak and spreading.
