French Goncourt literary award goes to Marie NDiaye
Marie NDiaye has been awarded the Goncourt, which is the most prestigious French literary prize.

42-year-old NDiaye, whose father is Senegalese and her mother is French, has become the first black woman to get this award ever and the first woman in the last ten years to receive it.

Marie NDiayeNDiaye was given the prize for her book entitled Trois Femmes Puissantes (Three Powerful Women), and she is reported to have said at the awards ceremony: "This prize is an unexpected reward for 25 years of persistence."

NDiaye, who now lives in Berlin,  had first been in print at the age of just 17 with her debut novel, but since then she has also found fame as a screenwriter and playwright.

The Goncourt award is given to the author of the best new novel in French literature.
