The Union of the Mediterranean summit in Paris is reported to have cost the astonishing amount of 16.6m euros for it to be put on.
France had been the organiser of as many as 489 EU events while it held the presidency, with nine of these being summit conferences.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy's expenditure easily surpassed the French presidencies in 2000, when it was 56.9m euros, and 1995, when the total cost were 14.1m euros.
