France’s presidency of the EU one of the most expensive ever
It has been revealed that when France held the presidency of the European Union back in 2008 that it cost about one million euros (£907,000) every day, making it one of the most expensive terms of office ever held.

The French Court of Accounts totalled the cost of the French 2008 presidency of the EU at 171m euros.

French President Nicolas SarkozyThe AFP news agency has pointed out that only Germany has been known to have spent as much when the country held the presidency as France did.

The Union of the Mediterranean summit in Paris is reported to have cost the astonishing amount of 16.6m euros for it to be put on.

France had been the organiser of as many as 489 EU events while it held the presidency, with nine of these being summit conferences.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy's expenditure easily surpassed the French presidencies in 2000, when it was 56.9m euros, and 1995, when the total cost were 14.1m euros.
