62-year-old Frederic Mitterrand is actually the nephew of former President Francois Mitterrand, and was brought into his position in the French government by President Nicolas Sarkozy in June this year.
In The Bad Life Mitterand wrote: "I got into the habit of paying for boys," and also: "All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excited me enormously... the abundance of very attractive and immediately available young boys put me in a state of desire."
Mitterrand says he used the term "boys" loosely so it should not be taken as evidence of him being a paedophile.
Polanski has been arrested in Switzerland and faces deportation to America for sentencing for having had sex with a 13-year-old girl back in 1977.
