French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand denies paedophile claim
French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand has denied suggestions that he is a paedophile although he is the author of a book in which he admitted paying for "young boys" while he was in Thailand.

The Bad Life was published back in 2005, before he joined the government of France, but following his support for film director Roman Polanski, who faces charges relating to sex with a minor, Mitterand has come under attack from many quarters.

Frederic Mitterand62-year-old Frederic Mitterrand is actually the nephew of former President Francois Mitterrand, and was brought into his position in the French government by President Nicolas Sarkozy in June this year.

In The Bad Life Mitterand wrote: "I got into the habit of paying for boys," and also: "All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excited me enormously... the abundance of very attractive and immediately available young boys put me in a state of desire."

Mitterrand says he used the term "boys" loosely so it should not be taken as evidence of him being a paedophile.

Polanski has been arrested in Switzerland and faces deportation to America for sentencing for having had sex with a 13-year-old girl back in 1977.
