French government ends its support for Roman Polanski
The government of France will no longer be officially supporting the campaign for film director Roman Polanski’s release from prison in Zurich.

France says that the world-famous film-maker "is neither above nor beneath the law".

Roman PolanskiThis news comes as a backlash to the call by the French foreign minister for 76-year-old Polanski's release, after several leading European politicians have spoken out against saying they will not be supporting this campaign.

Polanski, who has French and Polish nationality, was arrested and detained in custody in Zurich on a US arrest warrant because he has to be sentenced for having had unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

French government spokesman Luc Chatel told the press: "We have a judicial procedure under way, for a serious affair, the rape of a minor, on which the American and Swiss legal systems are doing their job."

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has requested that his ministers should show "greater restraint" in supporting Polanski.

And Denis MacShane, a member of the British parliament wants the Council of Europe to support the director’s extradition to America so that he can be sentenced.
