Human rights activists formed a human chain when the operation started early on Tuesday morning and there were some scuffles between police and protesters.
Bulldozers were brought in to destroy the makeshift shelters in the camp after the migrants had been cleared out of the place.
The chief of Calais police, Pierre de Bousquet de Florian, said that the operation was successful. The police chief added that 146 adults and 132 self-declared minors had been detained and that they were all males.
The French authorities say the immigrants will be given the chance to apply for asylum in the country or assisted repatriation.
There are concerns, however, that all those who had left before the police arrived will simply set up a new illegal camp elsewhere.
