French Minister Xavier Darcos to meet Telecom chief over suicidesFrench Labour Minister Xavier Darcos is to going to meet with Didier Lombard, the chief of France Telecom, early next week to talk about the suicides that have taken place in the company’s employees over the past 18 months.
Twenty-three members of staff of the French company have taken their own lives since the beginning of last year, and unions say that the tough management methods are to blame.
However, France Telecom claim in their defence that the rate of suicides is statistically not unexpectedly high for a company with 100,000 employees and that the suicides are due to personal problems and are not to do with their work. A 32-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping out of a France Telecom office in Paris on Friday, and on Wednesday, a 49-year-old man in Troyes, east of Paris, stabbed himself after being told he was being transferred. The man survived his suicide attempt and is currently in hospital.
