French lorry driver dies after exposure to seaweed
A lorry driver in France has died after being exposed to seaweed that becomes toxic as it decomposes. An investigation has been launched to discover whether the driver did meet his death as a result of the sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) that is covering beaches along the Brittany coast.

The 48-year-old man died in July after transporting three lorry-loads of sea lettuce away from the Binic beach area, and although it was originally thought that he died from a heart attack the possibility is now being considered that the toxic seaweed caused it.

Francois FillonFrance's PM Francois Fillon warned of the health risk from the weed while visiting the beaches in August.

A horse that had been ridden across the sands had already collapsed and died, and the animal’s rider had become unconscious.

Investigators from France's National Institute for Environmental Technology and Hazards (Ineris) discovered hydrogen sulphide on the beach in such high amounts that it could be "deadly in few minutes".

Sea lettuce is harmless in the sea, and is actually an edible seaweed, but as it rots on the beaches it releases the poisonous gas.
