French consulate in Gabon set on fire
Activists in Gabon fought with security following the election of Ali Ben Bongo as president of the country having taken 42% of the vote, and the French consulate was set on fire by protesting crowds.

AFP news agency has said that a curfew has been brought in in Port Gentil in an effort to deal with the situation.

Ali Ben Bongo as presidentFrance had recommended that its 10,000 citizens should stay indoors to avoid the trouble.

It is claimed that last weekend’s poll was fixed to make sure Ali Ben Bongo got in as successor to his father, Omar Bongo, who was the leader of the oil-rich country for 41 years.

Protesters from the opposition in Port Gentil also broke into a jail and let the prisoners out.

The activists in Gabon have accused France of supporting the late Omar Bongo's government.

There are approximately 1,000 French soldiers stationed in Gabon and the International Development Minister Alain Joyandet stated that citizens of France will be protected.
