France invaded by Chinese hornets
France is being colonised by Chinese hornets (Vespa velutina), and the insects are a threat to the already declining honeybees.

The hornets have been increasing their numbers in south-western France and it is thought that they will spread to other European countries in the near future.

Chinese hornetsThe Chinese hornets, which can be recognised by their orange heads and yellow feet, are thought to have got to France on a boat from China in 2004.

As many as 1,100 nests have been found across France and the insects are firmly established in Bordeaux as well as having invaded the north as far as parts of Brittany.

Six people had to be treated in hospital last week after getting stung by the insects in the Lot-et-Garonne area of south-western France.

The Chinese hornet’s nests are very large and they will battle against and kill the European species of hornet as well as killing bees.
