
Minister Amara was quoted in the Financial Times on Saturday as saying that a veil that covered all of the body apart from the eyes was a means of "oppression of women".
MPs in France have been trying to decide on whether to ban the garment, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy had said the burka was not welcomed in his country.
Ms Amara said the burka should be banned although it might be difficult to make sure this ruling was being carried out by Muslims in France.
Ms Amara added that if the burka was no longer allowed it would help women to make a stand against extremists in the community.
