Bombs in Iran kill at least six

Two bombs exploded outside a privately run bank and a government office in the city of Ahwaz in Iran, and at least six people have been killed and 40 injured, according to police reports.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been due to make a speech at a religious centre nearby but his visit was cancelled due to bad weather.

Mr Ahmadinejad's media chief said the president was worried that the weather would have stopped people from coming to see him, and that he didn't think the bombs had anything to do with his planned appearance because there had been a series of such bombings last year that had nothing to do with him.

One bomb had exploded on Kianpars Street, inside the Saman Bank, killing at least six people and wounding 15 others, said a spokesman for the Police Task Force.

The spokesman said the second bomb attack took place on Golestan Road next to the Natural Resources Department, a state environmental agency, and that although the explosion caused injuries there were no more deaths.

Investigations found that percussion bombs had been used. These bombs produce a loud bang but usually do not cause much damage, the police spokesman added.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts, but an Iranian MP said he thought the bombings were the work of separatists.
