French tennis star Marion Bartoli beats Venus Williams

French woman tennis star Marion Bartoli has surprisingly defeated Venus Williams with a 6-2 5-7 6-4 victory score and won the WTA Bank of the West Classic title in Stanford, California.

Winning this match was Bartoli's first win in a top-tier WTA event and all the more of a surprise because she had beaten third seeded Williams, who is a top star of the sport.

In fact, Williams had claimed her 65th career singles final with a 6-0, 6-1 easy victory against fourth seed Elena Dementieva from Russia.

Bartoli and Williams had last played against each other in the 2007 Wimbledon final and in that game Venus was in control throughout and won in straight sets.

It came as a shock to Williams and her fans to see her losing out to the French star.
