American news legend Walter Cronkite dies aged 92
American television news legend Walter Cronkite has died after a long illness at the age of 92.

A spokeswoman for CBS News confirmed that Cronkite died at his New York home on Friday with his family at his side at the time.

legend Walter CronkiteMr Cronkite had been famous for presenting the evening TV news programme for CBS from 1962 to 1981.

In his legendary career he covered such newsworthy landmarks as the assassination of former US President John F Kennedy, the moon landing, and the Watergate scandal.

In 1972, Cronkite was called "the most trusted man in America" in a poll of the American public.

Tributes are coming in for Cronkite and US president Barack Obama is reported to have described the legendary newsman as "a voice of certainty in an uncertain world."
