French Barbarians gang leader sentenced to life
The leader of a French gang known as the Barbarians has been given a life sentence for the torture and murder of Ilan Halimi, in 2006.

28-year-old Youssouf Fofana must serve at least 22 years in prison in France for the murder of Halimi, who was Jewish and whose death sparked anti-Semitism protests at the time.

The gang had held Halimi captive for over three weeks before he was killed. His body had been discovered by a railway line, handcuffed to a tree, naked and very badly burned.

Another 26 people were also charged as accomplices in the crime and received sentences ranging from six months to 18 years in prison.

Mr Halimi had been lured by a female gang member to an empty apartment in the Parisian suburbs in February 2006 and had then been attacked and drugged.

The gang then tried holding him ransom and demanded a large sum of money from his family believing they would get it because Fofana thought all Jews were very rich.

After he had killed Halimi he went to the Ivory Coast and is said to have made death threats to Mr Halimi's family before being extradited to France to stand trial for murder.
