Atlantic Rowing Race third place goes to James Cracknell and Ben Fogle

British rowers James Cracknell and Ben Fogle have been narrowly beaten into third place in the Atlantic Rowing Race.

However, although they only took third place the British pair of rowers were the first two-man crew across the finish line in Antigua on Thursday.

Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and television presenter Ben Fogle battled with British four-man crew Atlantic 4 for second place but the heavier crew won by just under five hours.

The race was actually won on 8 January by Devon-based quartet All Relative.

At one point the Atlantic 4 crew of David Martin, Neil Wightwick, Glynn Coupland and George Simpson trailed James Cracknell and Ben Fogle but upped their pace in the final stages to cross the line in 49 days 14 hours and 21 minutes.

James Cracknell and Ben Fogle covered the 2,931mile course from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the West Indies in 49 days 19 hours and 8 minutes.
