The actor added that he had had asked Fawcett to marry him so many times in the past that it had become a joke between them but this time it was for real.
However, he also pointed out that 62-year-old Fawcett, who was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, is battling for her life as she fights the disease.
In May this year, O'Neal was quoted in People magazine as saying that Fawcett's cancer had spread to her liver and that she had stopped having treatment for it.
Back in the year she was originally diagnosed with the disease she had got rid of the cancer just four months after it was found, however, sadly it came back again in May of the following year.
O'Neal and Fawcett have been romantically linked since 1982 and have a son called Redmond.
