F1 French Grand Prix, Magny-Cours

Formula1The French Grand Prix was held at Magny-Cours on Sunday 3rd July and for the first time for over twenty years there was no French driver on the grid however French car maker Renault was there with cars for Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Some of the expected excitement was taken away when Kimi Raikkonen was relegated ten places on the grid due to having his engine changed on Saturday, starting from thirteenth on the grid he finished a very creditable second to Renault's Fernando Alonso but never challenged for the lead. Alonso starting from pole managed to get away from Jarno Trulli and built a lead that he was never to lose even during pit stops. These two plus Ferrari's Michael Schumacher were the only drivers on the same lap at the end of the race.

Jarno Trulli continued to shine for Toyota and finished in fifth position one place behind Jensen Button who finally scored his first points of the season. Giancarlo Fisichella stalled his engine in the pits and consequently lost places to finish sixth. The last two points scoring places were taken by Ralf Schumacher in his Toyota and Jacques Villeneuve in his Sauber-Petronas.

This was generally an uninteresting race due to Alonso's domination but very well received by the hordes of blue and yellow clad Renault fans packing the grandstand in a sea of Renault coloured clothes and flags.
