40-year-old Chaz is also the son of the late Sonny Bono, who like Cher was a singer. Sonny and Cher came to fame with their smash hit I Got You, Babe.
Cher was also quoted as saying: "I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny and although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding.
"The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."
Before the operation in which she changed her sex to male, Chastity had written a book in which she claimed that she and her mother had fallen out after Cher found out that her daughter was a lesbian.
Cher and Chastity, as she was then known, managed to get over this though and were reconciled a short time afterwards.
