French capital of Paris welcomes Dalai Lama as a citizen
The French capital of Paris has welcomed the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama by officially making him an honorary citizen.

Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe has named the Dalai Lama as a citizen of Paris, and President Nicolas Sarkozy said this was a municipal matter, not an act of the French state.

Dalai LamaFrance has been hoping to patch up its very damaged relationship with China following problems between the two nations.

However, China is not at all happy with what has just been done, and on Monday claimed that giving the Dalai Lama citizenship of Paris was a "grave interference" in links between France and China.

China accuses the Dalai Lama of wanting to split the country, but he maintains that he only wants independence for the people of Tibet.

Problems were sparked between France and China, after protests took place during last year's Olympic torch relay through Paris, followed by a December meeting between President Sarkozy and the Dalai Lama.
