French mime artist Marcel Marceau's possessions auctioned
French mime artist Marcel Marceau's personal belongings and his artwork are being auctioned in Paris to pay off the debts he left when he died at the age of 84 in 2007.

Marceau's distinctive white sailor-suit and the battered silk opera hat he was famous for wearing are among the 900 lots up for sale, and his paintings are also being auctioned.

Marcel MarceauSo far the two-day auction has raised 245,000 euros ($342,000) to help clear Marceau's debts.

Although Marceau was world famous and such a successful artist towards the end of his life he rang up large debts from spending money on financing his theatrical projects.

Many of Marceau's fans bought some of his possessions, and they say that his belongings should be housed in a museum to keep his legacy safe.

Marceau's career started after World War II, when he toured across Europe and America.

Marceau's family have said that selling the mime artist's possessions was the only way they could hope to clear the debts.
