
A Scientology lawyer is going to defend the religious organisation against the charges and has denied any unlawful practice took place with regard to the woman.
France already considers that Scientology is a sect, and the religion could face a ban from the country if it loses this case.
The woman complainant alleges that she was approached by Scientologists in Paris, who offered her a free personality test, however, she claims she eventually parted with her savings to buy books, medicines and the Scientology E-meter device.
The lawyers for the prosecution argue that Scientology aims to make money by means of pressuring people and selling dubious treatments.
Scientology's legal representative Patrick Maisonneuve was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying: "We will contest every charge and prove that there was no mental manipulation."
Scientology was started in the 1950s by American sci-fi writer L Ron Hubbard and is classed as a new religion.
