Peter Gabriel and Jose Antonio Abreu win Polar Music Prize
British rock singer-songwriter and musician Peter Gabriel and celebrated Venezuelan composer Jose Antonio Abreu share this year's Polar Music Prize.

Former Genesis frontman Gabriel won the award for his "ground-breaking, outward-looking and boundary-busting artistry," according to the committee in charge of the awards.

Polar Music PrizeGabriel and Abreu will each be receiving one million kroner (£84,000) from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and King Carl XVI Gustaf will be making the awards at a special ceremony being held at the Stockholm Concert Hall on 31 August.

The Polar Music Prize is the most prestigious music award in Sweden and it is divided into separate classifications for both pop and classical musicians.

Abreu had created a network that could provide music classes and workshops for young people and his work came in for praise by the Polar Music Prize committee too.

The Polar Music Prize had originally been set up by Stig Anderson, who managed the Swedish pop sensation ABBA.
