French footballer Djibil Cisse arrested for assault

French footballer Djibril Cisse is reported to have been arrested on suspicion of assault following an incident at a lap-dancing club in Newcastle in the north of England.

Cisse, who plays as a striker for the Sunderland football team on a loan deal from the club Marseille in France, was detained because he was suspected of assaulting a woman at the premises.

Police have confirmed that a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault in the early hours of Monday.

It is thought that the incident, about which the details are unclear, took place outside the Diamonds club in Grey Street, Newcastle.

Cisse, who is a former Liverpool player and is married with two children, was subsequently released on police bail but the football club he plays for have made no further comment on the matter.
