French President Charles de Gaulle had withdrawn his country from Nato's command back in 1966 because he claimed it undermined France's sovereignty.
But not everyone is happy with the proposed move and it is being said that it will merely make France into "a clone of Great Britain".
The French president responded to critics by saying that it wasn't sensible not to have a say in the Nato's decisions on military strategy, and this meant France should be in it, especially considering that it was a founder member.
He further pointed out that whilst Nato would remain a central part of France's security and defence policies, he had no intention of surrendering the country's independent nuclear deterrent.
President Sarkozy is thought to be likely to make the move official with a letter to Nato.
