French President Sarkozy sued by MGMT American pop duo
American indie rock duo MGMT have taken legal action against French President Nicolas Sarkozy for using one of their hit songs as a campaign soundtrack without asking permission to do so.

MGMT allege that President Sarkozy's UMP party made use of their song entitled Kids at a national congress as well as on videos shown online.

President SarkozyMGMT are demanding compensation for infringement of their rights over the music.

UMP has admitted they did use the song, however, the party says this was an error and to make amends has offered a symbolic gesture of one euro.

MGMT's French lawyer Isabelle Wekstein is not accepting this offer, which she claims is an insult to the band.

Ms Wekstein explained that the UMP party had paid a standard 53 euro fee to the French music licensing body but she claims this was not enough to cover the use of the song, especially for its use online.

This news arrives just one week before the French parliament considers a new law pushed by President Sarkozy's party, that is actually calling for increased penalties for online piracy and file-sharing.
