
The veteran popular singer had been born Shahnur Aznavourian in Paris in 1924, and his parents were both Armenian immigrants.
In the Soviet era Aznavour had kept in touch with Armenia and he became an official citizen of the country in December.
In 1988 an earthquake had killed as many as 25,000 people, and the singer created the Aznavour for Armenia committee to help those people who survived the catastrophe.
Aznavour, who is most famous for his 1974 number one hit, She, performed his last major concert in 2001.
