French singer Charles Aznavour to be an ambassador
French popular ballad singer Charles Aznavour is going to be an ambassador to Switzerland on behalf of his ancestral homeland of Armenia it has been reported.

84-year-old Aznavour had explained on Armenian TV that although he had at first been hesitant to accept he had now done so with a great sense of honour.

Singer Charles AznavourThe veteran popular singer had been born Shahnur Aznavourian in Paris in 1924, and his parents were both Armenian immigrants.

In the Soviet era Aznavour had kept in touch with Armenia and he became an official citizen of the country in December.

In 1988 an earthquake had killed as many as 25,000 people, and the singer created the Aznavour for Armenia committee to help those people who survived the catastrophe.

Aznavour, who is most famous for his 1974 number one hit, She, performed his last major concert in 2001.
