American and Russian satellites collide in space
Communications satellites belonging to the US and Russia are reported to have collided in space. This is the first known incident of this kind.

The American company Iridium’s satellite crashed into a defunct Russian satellite whilst travelling at high speed nearly 780km (485 miles) over Siberia on Tuesday, according to reports made by Nasa.

The satellites colliding together created massive clouds of debris, and it is expected that weeks will be needed for the clouds to clear.

Nasa is currently keeping track over the debris, which it hopes will burn up in the atmosphere of the Earth.

There is a worry though that the debris will spread out and could cause a risk of damaging the ISS, which is in orbit some 435km below where the satellites met with their accident.
