23-year-old Tsonga said afterwards that he was very happy with the result and how well he had been playing recently.
The two players were more or less on equal footing throughout much of the match but it was in the 10th game that an unforced error at the net from Chardy gave a clear advantage to Tsonga.
Then in the second set another Chardy unforced error gave the victory over to Tsonga.
Tsonga also added afterwards, that he is looking forward to defending his title and feels optimistic about his current campaign.
