French knighthood for Harry Potter author JK Rowling
British author JK Rowling, who made her name with the Harry Potter books, has been awarded a knighthood in the French Legion of Honour.

Rowling, whose great-grandfather was French, received the honorary title from President Nicolas Sarkozy at a ceremony in Paris, and it is the highest civilian honour in France.

Harry Potter author JK RowlingRowling, who is able to speak French, apologised to the crowd for naming Voldemort, the villain of her books, with a French name.

The name can mean either a thief or flight of death in French, but Rowling explained that he is most definitely English.

Rowling went on to thank the people of France the French for not being offended by this.

French President Sarkozy was full of praise for the author because he said she has got the young people reading again.

JK Rowling’s fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was already a bestseller in France before it was even translated into the language of the country, and it became the first book in English to top the French sales chart.

Rowling added that her great grandfather was also a knight of the Legion of Honour and she said that he was awarded his knighthood because of his courage in World War I.
