French film director Claude Berri dies in Paris
French film director and producer Claude Berri has died of a stroke aged 74 at a hospital in Paris, it has been reported.

Paris-born Berri, who is perhaps most famous for Jean de Florette, had been ill for some time and had suffered a stroke back in 2006. He had been rushed into the hospital where he died on Saturday.

Claude BerriThe veteran director was often referred to as the "godfather" of French film, and he had worked alongside many of the best French actors as well as winning an Oscar for his 1963 short film Le Poulet.

Berri also made, and is very well known for, the two-part story about life in Provence, entitled respectively, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has paid tribute to Berri and described the director as "legendary".

In 2008, Berri worked on the production of the comedy film Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis, which is going to be made again in Hollywood but retitled Welcome to the Sticks.
