French President to make judiciary changes Le Monde says
The Le Monde French newspaper says that President Nicolas Sarkozy is likely to be about to reveal sweeping changes to the French judiciary system.

The publication reports that the leader of France wants to get rid of investigating magistrates, who also act as independent judges at present.

President SarkozyThe alterations President Sarkozy wants to make would permit state prosecutors and police to be in charge of investigations in place of magistrates.

However, there are those who oppose the move claiming it will allow more political involvement in cases.

State prosecutors, whom the French justice minister is in charge of, are thought to be responsible for dealing with criminal cases in future.

The changes are said to make the French justice system much more like that of the English-speaking world but unions in France claim the changes would harm the independence of the system they have in the country.
