Thiamine is contained in meat, yeast and grains.
The new study adds its findings to work already done by the Warwick University team, which had demonstrated that many diabetes sufferers have a deficiency of vitamin B1.
The research scientists concluded that this cheap nutritional supplement could help most people who suffer from diabetes because as many as between 70% and 90% of those with the disease are lacking thiamine.
The study team claim that thiamine helps protect cells against the potential damage caused by the high blood sugar levels found in those people who are suffering from diabetes.
Whilst the conclusions of the university team are very promising the team plan much more research on the subject.
