French President Sarkozy agrees on arms deal with Brazil
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has negotiated an arms deal with Brazil where he has been on a two-day visit.

The South American country’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has agreed to sign an 8.6bn euro ($12bn; £8.2bn) deal to buy 50 helicopters and five submarines from France, and the transfer of technology to help Brazil create its own arms industry is also included.

French President SarkozyFour of the submarines Brazil is buying will be conventional types, but the fifth will be nuclear-powered and France will be in charge of providing the technology needed to power and run them, although the subs will be built in part and put together in Brazil.

Helibras, which is a subsidiary of Eurocopter, will make the EC725 helicopters and the craft are expected to be delivered to Brazil in 2010.

Details of the deal revealed by an official from France stated that 6bn euros would be going to French firms and the 2.6bn euros to companies in Brazil.

President Sarkozy said that the deal was a historic occasion. The French leader had earlier put forward his opinion that Brazil should have a greater role in world affairs as well as being a permanent part of the UN Security Council.
