French President Nicolas Sarkozy angers Iran with comments
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sparked anger in Iran with comments he made about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is the leader of the country.

The French president had made the remark that he would not be able to shake hands with anyone who said Israel had to be wiped off the map and he was referring to the Iranian president when he did so.

Nicolas SarkozyIran have summoned the French ambassador Bernard Poletti and told him they object very strongly against what President Sarkozy had said and warned that there would be trouble if the French leader should say anything like it again.

The French president had been speaking at the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights when he said: "How is it that a people such as the Iranian people - one of the world's greatest peoples, one of the world's oldest civilisations, sophisticated, cultured, open - have the misfortune of being represented as they are today by some of their leaders?

"I have said this to my friend Kofi: I find it impossible to shake hands with somebody who has dared to say that Israel must be wiped off the map."
