Ronaldo had scored 42 goals when his team Manchester United were victorious in the Champions League and Premier League last season.
That total of 42 goals won the Golden Shoe for Ronaldo as European football’s top scorer, and in winning this he has become the first winger to collect the trophy.
As many as 77 of the 96 journalists on the Ballon D'Or panel voted for Ronaldo as their number one football player of the year.
Barcelona's Lionel Messi was in second place and Liverpool player Fernando Torres was third. Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were also contenders for the award that Ronaldo claimed.
