French award for Afghanistan-born writer Atiq Rahimi
Atiq Rahimi, who was born in Afghanistan, has been awarded the Prix Goncourt for his novel Syngue Sabour, or Stone of Patience.

This award is a great honour in France and only presented to the best writers. This is the author’s first book in French – all his other past work is in Persian.

Atiq Rahimi46-year-old Rahimi is most famous for his 2002 book Earth and Ashes, which was adapted and made into a film.

Syngue Sabour, which was written in French, is about an Afghan woman, who searches for freedom from oppression but Rahimi explained that he writes not just on behalf of and about women from Afghanistan but for and about all women of the world.

Rahimi was born in Kabul in 1962 but he fled Afghanistan back in the 1980s, going first to Pakistan

French culture minister Christine Albanel praised Rahimi’s latest book calling it sober and alive."
