The new locational technology is known as Geode and is in experimental stages at present before a full launch for users of the version 3.1 of Firefox.
People who wish to take advantage of the Geode project will be able to decide how much location information they provide and Firefox say the company is keen to stay ahead of concerns over customer privacy. Geode will be under the user’s personal control and specifications.
The Geode project will be utilising technology from the Skyhook firm, which can plot a computer's location from nearby wireless networks, and its Loki system can find a location in seconds with a reported accuracy of about 10 to 20 metres.
