Beaufort Books to publish The Jewel of Medina in America
American publisher Beaufort Books is going ahead with the publication of The Jewel of Medina, a very controversial book about the Prophet Muhammad's child bride.

Random House in the UK decided not to risk printing the book by Sherry Jones due to fears it could provoke attacks on the firm and other terrorism.

Beaufort BooksA fire was started at the offices of British publisher Gibson Square Books last month and three men were subsequently arrested and charged.  The suspects Ali Beheshti, 40, Abrar Mirza, 22, and Abbas Taj, 30, are all in custody until their trial on 17 October.

The novel by Ms Jones charts the life of A'isha from when she was six until the Prophet Muhammad's death.

Beaufort Books is going ahead with publication of The Jewel of Medina ahead of schedule so the book could be assessed on its literary merits as opposed to any perceived offence it may cause to the Islamic community.

Random House took the opposite view having been advised that its publication might cause offence to Muslims.

At present it cannot be said if the book will be getting published eventually in Britain.
