It seems apt that in real life 48-year-old Duchovny is being treated for sex addiction when on the TV screens he plays a sex-obsessed man called Hank Moody in the Californication series.
Duchovny married actress Tea Leoni in 1997 and the couple have two children.
Showtime, the broadcaster of Californication, also released a statement saying: "All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time."
Duchovny made his name as an actor playing FBI agent Fox Mulder in very popular The X Files science-fiction TV series, which came out first in 1993.
