
Mahmoud Darwish was the most famous Palestinian poet in the world, and his works brought attention to his country’s cause, as well as containing strong criticism of the fighting between Palestinian factions.
In 2007, Darwish had condemned the trouble that erupted in Gaza between Hamas and Fatah, and he called it "a public attempt at suicide in the streets".
The poetry of Mahmoud Darwish has been translated into over 20 languages, and he has won many international awards for his writing.
Darwish is considered the Palestinian national poet, who gave a voice to his nation’s dream. He is also credited with having created the 1988 declaration of independence as well as helping to bring forward a Palestinian national identity.
