French President Sarkozy says no EU pressure on Ireland
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has denied that France and the EU are exerting any form of political pressure over the Republic of Ireland regarding the Lisbon Treaty.

The president, who has been visiting Ireland, explained there wasn’t any misunderstanding over a possible second Irish referendum.

French PresidentIrish voters had turned down the EU reform treaty in a referendum back on 12 June.

French President Sarkozy claimed he had never suggested that Ireland should hold a new referendum.

What he stated he had said was: "I said at some point or other the Irish must give their opinion."

President Sarkozy had been in discussions with Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Brian Cowen, but hundreds of anti-treaty protesters gathered outside the government building in Dublin during the French leader’s visit to Ireland.

Irish leader Cowen is planning to visit France in September for further talks with President Sarkozy on resolving the treaty problem and he said: "We'll work together on this, there are no ready-made solutions."
